If they want to stick to their Q4 opening deadline, it's time to make an announcement!

"I think the award submission itself talks about 55 kilometres of pipework, 80 kilometres of cabling, that no one will see. Yet, without that, nobody will experience a wonderful journey within the water park. Forty-three rides, 43 attractions - it will be a cracking experience for everyone when it opens towards the end of this year. But it wouldn't have happened without Voltas; clearly the design is great, but Voltas has made it happen.”

The capital’s newest, biggest waterpark will be open by the end of the year – and 50 lucky locals will be able to try the rides early.

The final touches are being put to Yas Waterworld and an official opening date will be announced this month. “The park is getting very close to completion,” said Mike Oswald, the park manager. “We’re running around, making sure everything gets done on time. Right now, really it’s about tuning and tweaking.” Some rides are already being tested. The goal is to have all 43 ready for the opening.

“People have not seen anything like this anywhere else in the world,” Mr Oswald said.

Yas Waterworld will feature four unique rides, including the world’s largest and fastest funnel ride. Construction of the 15-hectare park began in February last year. It can hold 7,000 people and will open every day. Tentative hours are scheduled for 10am to 7pm, and premium “queue-jump” tickets will be available.

Judging from the pictures I'd say they won't manage to open this before early next year!

“The elapsed timeframe is the time in which you would build a flat park with no theming,” Mow says. “But, even so, it is the best water-park I’ve ever been involved with and this is my seventh. I’d say it’s the best in the world.”

Rashmani agrees. “This is the best water park in the world – it’s a fact. With WTI having 30 years experience in designing and building water parks, we know this is the best in the world.”

Atkins' innovative design on Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi has won a Leading Edge award at the recent World Waterpark Association (WWA) symposium. The inaugural Leading Edge award recognises those who have brought a project to fruition and demonstrated industry leadership and innovation. Yas Waterworld is the first water park of its kind, evolving from a purely water based park to an adventure attraction complete with rollercoasters.

Judges highlighted Atkins for its design work and were impressed with Atkins' architectural ingenuity, theming and original storyline.
