  1. Judging from the pictures I'd say they won't manage to open this before early next year!

    Construction Week Online article

“The elapsed timeframe is the time in which you would build a flat park with no theming,” Mow says. “But, even so, it is the best water-park I’ve ever been involved with and this is my seventh. I’d say it’s the best in the world.”

Rashmani agrees. “This is the best water park in the world – it’s a fact. With WTI having 30 years experience in designing and building water parks, we know this is the best in the world.”

    Award for Yas Waterworld designer

Atkins' innovative design on Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi has won a Leading Edge award at the recent World Waterpark Association (WWA) symposium. The inaugural Leading Edge award recognises those who have brought a project to fruition and demonstrated industry leadership and innovation. Yas Waterworld is the first water park of its kind, evolving from a purely water based park to an adventure attraction complete with rollercoasters.

Judges highlighted Atkins for its design work and were impressed with Atkins' architectural ingenuity, theming and original storyline.

Yas Waterworld awarded prior to opening

In his citation on the criteria leading to Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi's nomination and win, WWA Board of Director's Vice Chair, Jim Basala, Deep River Waterpark, said, "Each year the World Waterpark Association polls its membership in search of projects that stand at the forefront of the water attractions industry. This year, the inaugural WWA's Leading Edge Award was created to acknowledge collaborative projects that demonstrate industry leadership and innovation. Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi has been recognized for demonstrating this leadership and innovation through its storyline, park and ride design, theming and attention to every detail."

He added, "The commitment to developing a sustainable operation was further appreciated by the WWA Nominating Committee. In short, Yas Waterworld is an incredible waterpark that will inspire everyone in the industry."

Commenting on the win, Mike Oswald, said, "We have tried to do something really different and special at Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi and it a huge honour to have those efforts recognized by our peers from the international water attractions' industry. To win this award even before we officially open our doors is just one more reason for visitors and the industry at large to look forward to what we have in store."

Built on 15 hectares of land in the heart of the UAE's premier leisure destination Yas Island, Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi has been developed by ALDAR Properties PJSC and is operated by Farah Leisure Parks Management L.L.C.

The water park's unique theme centers around 'The Legend of the Lost Pearl' - an original story about 'Dana', a young Emirati girl, on a quest for the legendary pearl that had once brought prosperity to her village. Visitors can look forward to more than 43 exciting rides, slides and attractions - including four one-of-a-kind rides that have never been seen before at any other park in the globe.

  9. Opening already end of November?

“When you look at the way the park is laid out, everything connects,” says Mike Oswald, manager of Yas Waterworld. “The most prominent feature is the Lost Pearl itself, which stands on the top of a pearl crag, Jebel Dhana, which is roughly 43 meters high. The pearl itself is eight metres in diametre,” he added.

At the moment, Jebel Dhana is covered in scaffolding, as the park’s construction is approaching completion. The team hopes to open it by end November or early December.
