Wanda are looking to expand further into film production

Dalian Wanda already owns Legendary Entertainment and AMC’s cinema chain.
Chinese property-to-entertainment conglomerate Dalian Wanda is in talks to buy a controlling stake in Dick Clark Productions, the company that runs the Golden Globe awards and Miss America pageants, as it expands a growing Hollywood portfolio.

Run by China’s richest man, Wang Jianlin, Wanda already owns Legendary Entertainment, co-producer of film hits such as “Jurassic World” – which was the biggest U.S.-China movie deal when it was sealed in January. It also owns U.S. cinema chain AMC Entertainment Holdings.
Revenue from Wanda‘s cultural division, which also includes its growing tourism business, theme parks and sports, is expected to grow at least 30% this year, potentially reaching 70 billion yuan ($10.5 billion), according to Wang.

  2. Hefei Wanda City, about 500 kilometers (311 miles) west of the $5.5 billion Shanghai Disney Resort, will open to the public on Saturday. Besides theme park facilities, the 35 billion yuan ($5.2 billion) development will include hotels, a movie theater, a shopping mall and residential apartments across 160 hectares (1.6 square kilometers), according to Wanda.
Wang is planning more Wanda City projects in cities such as Harbin, Guangzhou and Wuxi. Wanda said Friday Chongqing Wanda City, which will cost about 55 billion yuan to build, has started construction and will probably attract 20 million visitors annually after it’s completed by 2020. He also aims to open five of the projects overseas by the end of the decade.
Behind the wave of theme parks is China’s growing middle class, which is fueling demand for leisure activities. There are about 300 parks in operation already in China with scores more on the way, according to Macquarie Group Ltd. estimates in January. The government predicts the nation’s $610 billion tourism industry will double over five years.

  3. Wanda will be a major force in the Chinese industry for years. I fail to see how any Wanda park is a Disney rip off at all. All 3 that have opened so far are incredibly diverse with a very good standard of ride.

The Wanda Movie Park in Wuhan is certainly not representative of their theme park aspirations and Xishuangbanna, Hefei and Nanchang are all excellent parks. The CO may be full of hot air about Disney and Universal but Wanda is here to stay.

  4. Wanda will build the 9 billion theme park in Jinan.

  5. Wanda, with its Disney and Universal rip-off theme parks, will have no future in the industry.

Wuhan movie park already closed. No visitors.

Now, it looks like Jianlin’s Dalian Wanda Group may have some crow to eat. Wanda said this week that its indoor movie theme park in the central Chinese city of Wuhan — which it opened in late 2014 with great fanfare — has been closed for “upgrades and renovations.”

In a brief statement, the company said the facility was closing as of July 31. No reopening date was given.
When the theme park opened, the company said it expected 3 million visitors in the first year. But the Chutian Metropolis Daily, a local newspaper, quoted a former Wanda employee as saying it was only attracting about 200 people per day. Four hundred people came on Sunday, the paper said.

Viacom may be selling its Paramount Pictures stake to Dailan Wanda Group. I wonder what affect that would have on the plans for Paramount-branded theme parks…

China’s Dalian Wanda Group Co. is in talks with Viacom about buying 49% of the studio, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Could a Disney Theme Park Be Coming to Australia?
According to rumors, China’s richest man and chairman of Wanda group, Wang Jianlin, is in talks with the Queensland State Government about the possibility of opening a new theme park and some are speculating it’s a Disney one. The potential location would be in Coomera, Queensland, near many of the other continent’s major attractions.

China’s property to entertainment empire, Dailan Wanda group has started construction of a cultural tourism center near Guilin, in the Guangxi region. Cost of the project is pegged at $2.46 billion (RMB16 billion.)
The Guilin Wanda Cultural Tourism City, in China’s southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, will include an amusement park, a film park and an ocean park. The 200 hectare site, with a built out area of 1 million square metres, will also find room for five and six star hotels, retail and leisure facilities, a stage show and amusement park rides.

The mega-project is the 11th large-scale location based entertainment facility for Wanda in China.
The opening is scheduled for 2020 and Wanda is forecasting 20 million visitors in the first year. It says they will bring in annual $770 million (RMB5 billion) of tourism income.

The official statement from Wanda Group:

Wanda is breaking ground on a major tourism project in China's southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on May 20. The mega-project, the 11th of its kind for Wanda's large-scale cultural tourism projects in China, is a 16 billion RMB cultural tourism investment in Guilin and is the largest investment in Guangxi to date.

Called Guilin Wanda Cultural Tourism City, the project spans 200 hectares -- the size of some small European villages, and has a gross floor area of 1 million square meters. Guilin Wanda City boasts an amusement park, a film park and an ocean park. Many of the attractions, such as the film and ocean park, are indoor and open year-round. A shopping center is also open all four seasons and tourists can lift their spirits on bar street, which features 20 renowned foreign and domestic bars.

For more entertainment, Guilin Wanda City is full of high-tech amusement park rides, as well as a stage show highlighting Guangxi's local traditions and culture. Guests can stay in a hotel river resort with five and six star accommodations.

Guilin Wanda City aims to open in 2020 and is projected to reach 20 million visits in its opening year, while creating 20,000 jobs and 5 billion RMB in tourism revenue.

Guilin is one of the world’s most famous tourist towns and in 2015 it drew more than 42 million visitors. Wanda intends to turn it into a world-class tourism base that will fill the gaps in the city's tourism industry.

The Group’s Chairman Wang Jianlin expresses that Guilin Wanda City’s construction will promote Guilin and Guangxi tourism. It will change the development path by upgrading sightseeing, transforming holidays and building overall world-class tourism.

Wanda City is Wanda’s new, innovative world tourism brand and is the most advanced global commercial business model in the industry.
