"Mexico village struggles to navigate tourism tightrope"

Some worry the development of the surrounding resort areas [Cirque du Soleil theme park] has altered the river’s flow and could increase the flood risk to the Pacific Coast village, about 10km north of the beach town of Puerto Vallarta.

“This is like a ghetto - we’re here, we can’t see what’s happening on the other side,” said Vazquez, as trucks weighed down with construction materials trundled past his corner cafe.

“We’re not against development, it’s welcome ... but it’s putting us at risk (of flooding from the river).”
Grupo Vidanta, which owns luxury hotels such as the Grand Mayan between Jarretaderas and the Pacific coast, said it had teamed up with Cirque du Soleil on the theme-park development - which is expected to open in two years and will involve other companies.

It said it was committed to a strong environmental and social policy, and that its developments complied with all environmental legislation.

Cirque du Soleil, the Montreal-based circus and entertainment company, said it could not give details at this stage about the development in the Nuevo Vallarta resort area.

I am told that all of the rides and attractions are (were) built offsite and will be transported to Vallarta for assembly. If this is so, that should allow for some relatively quick progress. But, with Vidanta, who knows.

  4. Actually, that’s an old photo. I live in Puerto Vallarta and the buildings are almost finished. There are big lakes in both sides of the avenue and a lot of vegetation, too. They are probably just waiting for the materials to start with the rest of the park. But it still seems like a lot of work to do.

New satellite imagery from July 8, 2018 shows that all the land has been cleared and construction vehicles are on site but little to no progress is being made...

I saw recently that Cirque du Soleil announced a new concept called Creactive, an immersive training/entertainment venue. It will be built in Canada first and then expanded around the world. For many years, Vidanta has been touting a Cirque du Soleil academy that will be built either as part of the theme park in Nuevo Vallarta and/or the Joya show in Riviera Maya. Hopefully, with the opening of the park, we will also get a Creactive academy.

  7. Just got back from Vidanta in Riviera Maya. They are telling everyone that in Nov 2019, there will be a preview of the "The Park" for members only. In December 2019, "The Park" will be open to the general public.

Apparently there was an interview last night, according to a Vidanta tweet and post (Facebook) with Ivan Chavez and Daniel Lamarre on Forotv. Perhaps I am misreading the tweet and the interview will be tonight. If anyone can locate the interview and post a link that would be fantastic. I would imagine there will be some news about the park and collaboration between the two companies.

  9. Daniel Lamarre is in Mexico right now to participate in the Vidanta Forum, which starts tomorrow.

This is part of an interview he gave to a mexican newspaper today (May 15th, 2018)

Cirque du Soleil plans to open a theme park in Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit. "We will have a lot of artistic content and animations, screenings, street acts and special shows that people can only see in the park," said Daniel Lamarre, general director of Cirque du Soleil.

The complex will include a water park and another eco-tourism park, where outdoor shows with space for five thousand people will be shown. Each presentation will feature artists from Cirque du Soleil.
