Universal Studios in unsightly Soviet prefab high-rise suburbia? Nothing against the Moscow location, but seriously, at this highway junction?

    Translated from Russian!

MOSCOW, April 12 - RIA Novosti. Investment into "Galaxy Park" in Moscow will be in the range of $ 2.8 billion, according to project presentation materials.

According to the presentation, the former industrial area in the immediate vicinity of the Ring Road and the subway will be "a complex of mixed type". Comprising an area of 700,000 square meters, it will include shopping and entertainment, four high-rise offices, a conference center and a hotel. It is assumed that the "Galaxy Park" will be built on a 22 acres site at the intersection of Ring Road and Warsaw highway.

Construction is scheduled to start in late 2014 and the project is slated for an opening in 2018.

The complex will include a Universal Studios Moscow theme park (150,000 sqm), a Universal water park (20,000 sqm), and a Universal City Walk shopping and entertainment are. On top of that, there will be a sports and concert arena for 20,000 spectators.

"We will work together to create a theme park of an international standard and a first-class arena for mass entertainment and sports. Currently there are no such facilities in Russia."

It is expected that the Galaxy Park will be a huge attraction for both local residents and foreign visitors, that it will promote tourism in Moscow, make a financial contribution to the development of the Russian economy and create thousands of new jobs. Galaxy Park will attract visitors not only from the Moscow region, but also from Russia as a whole, from the Commonwealth of Independent States and the European Union.

"Russia is an important and attractive market, and we see tremendous potential for the development of theme park entertainment," said Michael Silver, president of global business development at Universal Parks & Resorts, a unit of NBC Universal. "Entertainment is an international language, and we will provide the same thrills, excitement and unique family adventure that Universal theme parks create around the world." The Universal Studios Company is not yet ready to disclose and discuss details of the planned theme park, water park, or individual rides and shows.

  3. It's a typical Soviet-style suburb, doesn't look like the perfect place for a Universal Studios park!

However, the construction of the park - not yet resolved the issue. The project has not yet passed the city planning commission land. According to Gutseriev, there are pre-project concept, to which investors in the near future will come to the city authorities to support the project.

Thank you for your contributions @rubold and @Vika!

It'd be terrific to see an indoor version of Universal Studios. I can see it working in Moscow, since it won't solely cater to Russian citizens (143 million), but to all the former Soviet Republics whose nationals have visa-free access to Russia. Wikipedia estimates the number of Russian speakers at around 280 million. This is a huge market, and apart from desolate fun fairs there's absolutely no theme park all the way from Minsk to Vladivostok. It's about time.

I marked the proposed location on Google Maps:

I attach photos of Galactica Park from Chapman Taylor architect website and from 1TV news websites. The sources http://www.chapmantaylor.com/ and http://www.1tv.ru/news/social/204224. On Chapyman Taylor website Galatica Park has year 2011, so maybe already old project? But how Universal will fit inside mall? Look a bit small for theme park inside mall on highway interchange.

Hey, I am from Russia . I guess everybody would love to know what they are talking about on this video. Here is my translated version:

“A giant theme park is planned in south of Moscow. Universal Studios’ construction will commence in 2014, its size will starch for more than 20 hectares. The core of this park will consist of various attractions, and next to it will be located an area for sports activities, shows, an aqua park, a musical theatre, a cinema, exhibition halls, restaurants and a shopping centre. In addition to that, 2 hotels, a congress hall and a huge parking space.

According to the plan, the door to Universal Studios will be open for the public in 2018. The project leaders said that the project will cost 3 billion US dollars. It’s the first park of its kind which will be built under the roof in a closed space.”
