  1. Opening date moved from 2019 to 2020.

Universal Parks & Resorts, a division of NBCUniversal which owns Universal Studios Hollywood, expects to open North China's first international theme park in Beijing by 2020.

An official from the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform told the Beijing Daily that construction of the US$8 billion Hollywood theme park started at the beginning of the month.

Its first phase is expected to be completed by 2019 with the site opening to public the following year, said the official.

With a 10 million-visitor target, the official said the park will have seven main sightseeing areas, including those based on the Jurassic Park and Despicable Me film franchises, making it a strong addition to the Chinese capital's already-impressive array of tourist and culture sites.

    Who took the perfect pic?

There must have been a photographer who took a picture of this from a straight angle. Anyone?

  4. Better not rotate it:

  5. Universal Beijing park layout rotate and resize. The best I could do...

  6. More pictures from the groundbreaking ceremony. Looks like the weather was a little nasty.

  7. I can see Waterworld. A Waterworld stunt show in China in 2020 -- seriously?

  8. Can we get a higher resolution and better angle of this?

  9. Groundbreaking ceremony took place on November 5.

Construction of Beijing's Universal Studios Theme Park project has kicked off in Tongzhou District on November 5. It is expected to be completed and open to the public in 2020.

Wang Tayi, Deputy General Manager of the Shouhuan Cultural and Tourism Investment Company Limited (BSH), the Chinese partner of Universal Studios on this project, says that the start of construction phase marks the project's transition from preparation to basic project construction.

The whole project - the park and resort - will cover an area of 4 square kilometers, with the initial project covering 1.59 square kilometers.

The total investment in the park is over 50 billion yuan (around 788 million US dollars). The park is expected to receive over 10 million tourists per year.
