  2. Yes it's a bit strange. While some bits really do look like they've spared no expense (such as the hotel), most of the park is either copied and pasted from elsewhere (eg, Wizarding World), rethemed from elsewhere (eg, Decepticoaster) or based on an existing ride system (eg, Jurassic Park dark ride).

I was excited to see what Universal did with the Mack powered invert ride system but for me this appears to be a huge let down - I thought it would be more dark ride than coaster (like Europa Park's Arthur) but it appears it's just their version of Islands of Adventure's Pteranodon Flyers. I'm honestly pulling a blank in terms of flagship rides; Disney bought us Pirates and Tron, but not sure what Universal are bringing to the table here (and I'm a huge Universal fan).

Another troubling thing is how sloppy the presentation around the park seems to be. The huge showbuilding for Forbidden Journey is there for all to see, no effort to hide the projectors for the nighttime show which are there in plain sight on the roofs of Hogsmede and on several towers around Wizarding World. Elsewhere the corrugated wall behind Waterworld (no effort to make it blend in) and the naked warehouse roof in the Kung Fu Panda area look really cheap when compared to Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi for example.

Sorry to be negative, but I haven't seen anything to back up the price tag here. I think all it took was one original, unique e-ticket and a bit more work in terms of the presentation and it would be a solid base for a theme park. But at the moment I don't have any yearning to visit which is rare for a mega-park in China.

  3. I feel like the budget for this resort has been overestimated because if the $6.5 Billon cost is accurate it would mean Universal Studios spent more in Beijing than Disney did in Shanghai. This makes no sense since Shanghai Disneyland looks superior to Universal Beijing in terms of both rides and theming.

New article and photos just came out about the preparations being made ahead of the opening:

The article says that the first opening phase, which is currently ongoing, is internal pressure test in which Universal Beijing Resort team members are invited to participate in various scenarios (including going on rides, eating, watching shows, etc.) to improve the operations and in turn the guest experience. The second opening phase will be trial operations for invited partners and invited guests. The third opening phase will be the grand opening.

More than 10,000 team members have already begun training and have participated in the internal stress tests.

More than one thousand cast and crew members have been conducting intensive rehearsals seven days a week since February, striving to provide tourists with high-quality and immersive entertainment performances by the grand opening.
Universal Beijing Resort reminds us that at present, Universal Beijing Resort has not released ticket information and opening date, and has not sold any tickets to the public. The information on ticket prices in the market is speculation.
