  1. During the Concept Design phase of Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park, the park's signature Steel Dolphin coaster was conceived by Legacy Entertainment as an Intamin Aquatrax coaster. It would have only been the second of its kind in the world, following Atlantis Adventure at Lotte World in Seoul, Korea. While the ride type was changed to a multi-launch Blitz Coaster during Schematic Design, key features from the original design, including the tunnel dive and splashdown were maintained.

  2. A subsection of Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park's Rainbow Falls land is the GOLD COAST- the park's highest concentration of attractions for young children. During the park's early design phases, Legacy Entertainment conceptualized the zone to feel like a colorful fantasy beachfront, accentuated by fantastical sandcastle structures.

Of Legacy's ride designs seen here, several continued through subsequent phases and are present in the final theme park, including the Zamperla Flying Tigers, Zamperla Jumping Star, and Zamperla family coaster.

  3. Arguably the most unique attraction at Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park is "Lava Drifting"- the current record holder for the World's Longest Rapids Ride. The attraction was designed in collaboration between Legacy Entertainment and WhiteWater West, with WhiteWater combining 3 of their ride systems to create a first-of-its-kind experience. During the park's Concept Design phase, the attraction had a more-elaborate show narrative, as seen in these original storyboards from Legacy Entertainment. While the ride's layout remained intact, some scenes and special effects did not make it into the final attraction on opening day. However, the spaces for them still exist, and the possibility exists to enhance the attraction in subsequent phases.

  4. Across from Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park's warm water island, Rainbow Falls, guests will find a land home to the park's cold water residents- Port Majestic. In contrast to Rainbow Falls' sleek futuristic aesthetic, Port Majestic sports the ambiance of a charming European port town, perpetually set at Christmastime. These illustrations were developed during the park's Blue Sky and Concept Design phases.

  5. Legacy Entertainment's theme park design of Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park organized the park's programming into two main islands- one home to warm water animals, and the other playing home to the cold water creatures. These lands were designed to be "polar opposites" of each other, with the tropical island immersing visitors in a high-tech futurescape, whereas the cold water island would transport guests to "a world frozen in time". These images are from the design and creation of "Rainbow Falls"- the park's warm water zone.

  6. One of the most popular and distinctive features of Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park are the iconic "WOW" letters making the park's entrance plaza. These were conceptualized early in the theme park's Concept Design phase when the project's working name was "World of Water". Later, when it was decided to change the park's name, the letters were so popular internally that the client opted to retain them as part of the final design. Since opening, this entrance plaza has become a social media hotspot, with some visitors even taking their wedding photos there.

These renderings and sketches were created during Legacy Entertainment's Concept Design and Schematic Design phases of the park.

  7. Throughout the creation of Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park, multiple bird's-eye illustrations were created by the theme park's designer, Legacy Entertainment.

When design began in 2013, the project was slated for a different parcel of land. In this scheme, the "polar opposite" lands (Warm Water / Cold Water) was a bit more pronounced than in the final version, with the two distinct islands sitting directly across from one another.

Also seen here are the original pencil layouts over which Nathaniel West created the amazing illustrations. This includes a richly-detailed depiction of the final park design by legendary artist James Michaelson.

Today, May 1, is the grand opening of Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park's signature spinning river rapids ride by WhiteWater! According to the park this first of its kind 10 minute ride experience is 1 kilometer in length and features a "huge" 21 meter drop.
