The next major project for Merlin in the UK has been announced. SW8 (just a project name for now) has been announced for Alton Towers. It will be a GCI woodie, with a 2 minute pre-show (a rarity for UK rides) and utilised a "silent magnetic lift system" which it is hypothesised could be mean a "launched" start. To help with sound issues that have plagued the park for much of it's life, parts of the ride including the entire first drop will be enclosed. Construction will being in the autumn of this year (2016) but the ride isn't slated to open until the Spring of 2018.

The axle got lifted up. Notice the gap still remaining above the columns. There is apparently a miss alignment between the two , needing to be fixed prior to final placement.
Latest opening guesses are late, late 2018 if not 2019.
Completion was originally expected to be sometime during 2015.
More positive news about another Universal themepark/waterpark/entertainment complex coming to Orlando's I-Drive.
This rumour has been doing the rounds for a while now but it seems to be coming true as new plans for the area show zoning for a new "themepark" to land bought by Comcast (Universals owners) earlier this year.
You can see the land is clear on Google Earth and there is currently nothing much west of the Orlando Eye so it would be a good location for a new park. It looks exactly like I would expect a potential Orlando theme park site to look at this stage; site clear of structures, lake location and surrounding areas clear for future expansion. At 475 acres it will be a big site if they build on it.A map provided to Orange County's planning department shows a new "Universal Studios Sub-District 8" that will have a theme park zoning, which fits into what many expected to be the future use of the land now owned by Universal's parent company, Comcast Corp. Comcast acquired that 475 acres earlier this year for more than $130 million and has called it a "strategic acquisition" for long-term growth.
