It appears that not only have plans for a theme park at Mall of the World have been dropped but the Mall of the World project as a whole has been replaced by plans for a new development called "Jumeirah Central" and construction will begin in mid-2017.

    Phase 1 detail designs:

The new master plan is focused on providing visitors and residents with connectivity to the surrounding city, with seven modes of transportation: a network of 33 roads, 152,500 square metres of walkways and plazas, bicycle routes, availability of bus and shuttle services, metro and tramlines as well as gondola rides.

The Mall of the World will have five components - retail, residential, office, hospitality, and entertainment – comprising 278 buildings across 3,525,000 square metres.

It seems there is no longer a mention of a theme park... (in connection with the previous post)

Morgan Parker, Dubai Holding's chief operating officer appointed last year to manage the colossal project, told the Bloomberg news wire the development will be scaled down from the original plan of one large shopping district and will now be built in stages, allowing the project to grow gradually over time, as demand and funding dictates.
The planned project will still have a total of 9.15 million square feet of retail space that will include a Rodeo Drive-like fashion district with street shops and traditional malls. Around 35 office buildings and 8,000 homes – including luxury and student accommodation – will also be part of the development that will help support the project’s shops and restaurants.
The development will also have a central station from where metro, tram, bus, and a free carbon-neutral electric shuttle would operate.

Any sources regarding the remodeling of the park?
Latest news tells that work will commence in 2017 and will consist of two phases. There has been no mention of the removal of the theme park.
The recently evolved master plan is focused on providing visitors and residents with connectivity to the surrounding city, with seven modes of transportation: a network of 33 roads, 152,500 square metres of walkways and plazas, bicycle routes, availability of bus and shuttle services, metro and tramlines as well as gondola rides.

  7. The project has been remodeled entirely. There will be no theme park.

  8. Mall of the World is being delayed. Updates below.

    September 2015:
Dubai: The mammoth Mall of the World development will get into full construction mode once the Dubai Police Academy — which occupies part of the site — takes up residence at a new location in Academic City.

Dubai Holding, the developer of MoW, is building the new Academy and which should be ready for occupation in another two years, according to a top official.

“I see it as giving us more time to give the various touches to the Mall of the World master plan,” said Morgan Parker, Chief Operating Officer for the development.

“I don’t see it as delaying the project — for something as complex as what is being attempted, it gives us time to take on a very thoughtful approach.”

“While everyone is waiting for us to ‘build, build, build’, there are real serious issues we are dealing with,” Morgan Parker, Dubai Holding's newly appointed chief operating officer told The National newspaper.

The main aim of the changes will be to refocus the project as a "mixed-use centre," rather than a low density urban development, Parker added.

Dubai Holding had said last year that tenders for the first phase of the project were likely to be awarded in the first quarter of this year, with probable completion by the first quarter of 2018. That timetable now appears to have been ambitious.

For instance, Mr Parker said that 60 per cent of the Mall of the World site is still occupied by Dubai’s Police Academy. And although a new facility is being built to replace this, it is not likely to be ready for at least two years.

“The responsibility of moving Dubai’s Police academy, where all of the new recruits come in and get trained, is significant. It’s an important part of Dubai’s security apparatus.”

    December 2015:
Dubai Holding’s planned ‘Mall of the World’ is progressing as per schedule and once completed, will be a boost to the tourism sector in Dubai, which attracted 13 million visitors last year.
