John Ussher, general manager of Legoland Development at Merlin Entertainments Group, is counting down the days before the RM750 million (S$300 million) attraction officially opens its doors to the public on Saturday.

The early signs already suggest that Legoland Malaysia - one of the crown jewels of the Iskandar Malaysia special economic zone - will be a roaring success.

In the last few weeks, the park has been overwhelmed by thousands of people - including those who had purchased season passes - all eager to get a glimpse of the 31-hectare venue.

Legoland Malaysia will be the sixth such attraction of its kind in the world after those in Denmark (the birthplace of Lego), the UK, California and Florida in the US, and Germany.

Legoland took less than three years to construct. The amusement park is located 15 minutes from the Tuas Second Link and 30 minutes from the Woodlands crossing.

  4. Legoland boss quick to respond

I wrote: "The miniatures are perfect replicas at a smaller scale but children are inquisitive and would want to know what they are looking at and unfortunately not all adults can tell what they were".

Recently, I met Legoland Malaysia's general manage Siegfried Boerst, during a campaign where taxi drivers were briefed and given a preview to the theme park.

Boerst said that the signboards will be erected before the park's opening on Saturday.

I also said that souvenirs should have local attachments, such as refrigerator magnets with the word Legoland Malaysia; T-shirts and other mementos.

Boerst said that was in the making and it will be available when the park opens.

  6. Opening confirmed for September 15:

Asia's first Legoland is fully operational and will be open to the public on Sept 15.

As the big day draws near, Legoland Malaysia's staff team of 600 are also reaching the end of a comprehensive training programme. Experts from Legoland theme parks around the world have been providing specialist support since July.

Legoland Malaysia general manager Siegfried Boerst said: "We have built and trained an excellent team here in Malaysia and I am delighted to welcome their family and friends to the theme park to celebrate National Day with us and to enjoy a special preview of our park.

"We will be spending the next two weeks fine-tuning every aspect of the park because we want to ensure the best possible experience for everyone when we open our doors.

"I am pleased to say that our rides are running, our chefs are cooking, and our shops are fully stocked."

“We hope this will be a giant boost that will be a test for other international companies who see Malaysia as a prime destination for theme parks and entertainment centers,” said an economic advisor to the Prime Minister’s office.

The advisor told Bikyamasr.com that “with Singapore residents able to hop over, this could be a huge region for development.”

The hope is that builders will have the opportunity to show their skills in the region and help make Malaysia a prime destination for this sort of investment.

Siegfried Boerst, General Manager of Legoland Malaysia told reporters, “We are trying to hire more model builders here because we are very happy with the results. They learn very quickly and they have built fabulous (Lego) models so we want to use the existing model shop to provide models for our other existing Legoland parks and in the new Legoland parks we hope to build in the near future.

“We are looking at two sites in Asia right now. No fixed date has been set yet, but we want to open a new Legoland park every three to four years,” he added.

It's definitely opening 15th September. In fact everything is already up and running, from rides to F&B. I was there last week for the media family day.

  10. 22 September? Oops! Wasn't the opening scheduled for 15 September before?

The opening of the theme park, which is jointly developed on a 31-hectare site in Medini North by the operation and management wing of Khazanah Nasional Bhd and Merlin Entertainments at a cost of RM720 million, is the most awaited event among people in the northern states.

United Taxi Association of Johor Baru (Gapet) treasurer Hadi Mohamed said the opening of the theme park, which is the first of its kind in Asia, would also help enhance the livelihood of taxi operators.

“Many passengers, especially from Singapore, have been asking about it and we personally can’t wait for the official opening of the theme park on Sept 22,” he said.
