With Legoland Malaysia ready to go, Mr Ussher's attention will soon turn to two more Asian Legolands - one in Nagoya and another in Chuncheon, South Korea, both of which are slated to open in 2015.

The launch of Legoland Discovery Center was also the right time for Merlin Entertainments to announce its willingness to further develop in Japan with a proper Legoland theme park.

According to Japan’s news agency Kyodo, UK officials revealed to be currently in negotiation to obtain a concession for an area in Nagoya. Lego management visited recently the Japanese city to seek support from Nagoya Mayor Takashi Kawamura for its bid to open a park around 2016.

During a meeting at the city office, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, chairman of Kirkbi A/S, the largest shareholder of Lego A/S, said Lego hoped by “early August or autumn” to officially select Nagoya as the site for the theme park, and Kawamura responded, “We’ll cooperate in the construction.” Lego officials subsequently visited a 10-hectare candidate site in Nagoya Port. If opened in Nagoya, it will be the first theme park in Japan featuring products of the Danish toymaker.

The chairman of Lego A/S’s largest shareholder, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen of Kirkbi A/S, was in Nagoya this week for a meeting at City Hall on Wednesday. He said that Lego hopes to make an official decision by autumn to choose Nagoya as the host city. Kawamura has also commented that the city would cooperate on the park’s construction. Later that day, Lego representatives made a visit to a possible building site measuring 10 hectares (24.7 acres) near the port of Nagoya.

Nagoya selected as Location for LEGOLAND Theme Park

Merlin Entertainments Group Ltd (‘Merlin’) and GCDS Corporation today announced the selection of Nagoya as the preferred location for LEGOLAND Japan and will now move forward with formal negotiations with the City. Pending the terms and conditions necessary for them to develop, construct and operate LEGOLAND Japan within Nagoya city limits, the family theme park could open as early as 2015.

Merlin Entertainments Group, the second largest visitor attraction group in the world, and GCDS Corporation, a venture company with exclusive territorial rights obtained from Merlin Entertainments Group Ltd, have been evaluating and discussing several sites in Japan. Based on the results of these discussions, Merlin and GCDS today have confirmed to Mayor Kawamura and other officials of the City of Nagoya, a desire to continue conducting further and more detailed studies including due diligence, consents and final contract terms.

LEGOLAND® is a full day theme park experience dedicated to families with children between the ages of 2 and 12 and features interactive rides, shows and attractions based on the LEGO® toy brand.
