Okay so I might be completely wrong here but check out the changes to the land to the East of Disneyland on Google maps.

This is a change between the end of 2016 and January 2017.

It's not connected with current hotel development nor with anything else that has been discussed for expansion as far as I can tell. Does anyone know what's going on in that space?

The "Sleeping Princess Castle" will be unprecedented, breaking the traditional Disney framework, in the original castle structure on the expansion, is expected in 2019 with a new look but also retain the original "sleep princess castle" style once again to meet from all over the world to come to the guests.

The Legislative Council has passed a HK$5.45 billion funding proposal for the expansion of Hong Kong Disneyland, despite questions from some lawmakers over its necessity and the government’s failure to negotiate better terms.

The expansion will include Marvel and Frozen themed lands, as well as a new stage show based on Moana. However, that expansion will cost Hong Kong taxpayers billions.

Lawmakers were unable to vote on the funding request at the end of a seven-hour debate, which included two failed motions seeking adjournment of the proceedings.

The government has said it would not rule out having a third-party investor in Hong Kong Disneyland if economic circumstances changed for the city and the theme park.
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Greg So Kam-leung made the comment at a four-hour Legislative Council finance committee meeting on Friday. The government was seeking approval for a HK$5.8 billion injection of taxpayers’ money into an expansion project for the park.
The six-year expansion will feature thematic zones based on the blockbuster Frozen and Marvel superhero films, as well as a transformation of the Sleeping Beauty Castle.
The expansion is due to start in 2018, but Legco meetings for approval have gone on since November, and Friday’s session ended without a vote.

The US entertainment giant promised to inject an additional HK$330 million for the park's expansion, taking its total contribution to HK$5.45 billion - the same amount to be committed by the government once lawmakers give the project the green light.
A document sent to lawmakers yesterday showed a revised plan in which Disney and the government would fund the project on an equal basis, or HK$5.45 billion each. The money would be injected into Hongkong International Theme Parks Ltd - the joint venture company that owns Hong Kong Disneyland - to support the expansion plan at the Phase 1 site of the theme park.
The plan aims to fund the launch of at least one new attraction almost every year from 2018 to 2023, which would increase the number of themed areas from seven to nine.
