Hong Kong Disneyland is adding an Iron Man-themed area in the hopes that the film's success at the Chinese box office will help draw more visitors to the underachieving resort.

The park said Tuesday that the Iron Man Experience is planned to open by late 2016.

Visitors will be able to "take flight with Iron Man on an epic adventure" involving a "battle against alien invaders" across Hong Kong.

The company revealed few other details, such as the project's budget.

It's the latest in a series of expansions aimed at bolstering visitor numbers at the struggling park.

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort announced that Mystic Point, the third and final chapter of its HK$3.6-billion expansion plan, will be unveiled on May 17, 2013, adding to the Resort a new and original experience and one of the most sophisticated attractions ever built by Disney.
In addition to the projection technology that creates unique visuals, a haunting tune and special music overlay, created by renowned composer Danny Elfman, weaves its way through the rooms of Mystic Manor.

“Mystic Magneto-Electric Carriage” is by far the most sophisticated ride system in Disney’s history. Every guest will be privy to a front-row experience, as the attraction is trackless, using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags and a wireless communication system to control the movement of 32 vehicles simultaneously.

    Marvel not confirmed yet

A recent announcement by the Hong Kong government that the city’s struggling Disneyland will expand with a Marvel superheroes area appears to have been premature.

“We haven’t confirmed anything about it as yet,” Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs told The Wall Street Journal. The Marvel plans are being characterized as only part of the “potential options” for an expansion of the seven-year-old theme park.

Andrew Kam Min-ho, managing director of the theme park, said his team had been mulling over a dozen proposals [editor's note: for the expansion], trying to shortlist one or two for the final decision.

“Some are feasible, but some are not,” he said.

Lawmaker Michael Tien Puk-sun was concerned about whether Hong Kong’s 27-hectare theme park – among the smallest in the world – could rise to the challenge of Shanghai’s Disneyland, which is now under construction.

“What expansion plans do we have? Are we going to have a theme park the same size as an American one? Or will we stay a second-class theme park, rather than first-class?” he said.

Hong Kong Disneyland made a profit of HK$109 million – its first profit since opening in 2005 – in the fiscal year to last September.

Kam said the new attractions that opened last year gave a big boost to admissions and revenue.

About 6.7 million tourists, up by 13 per cent, visited the park last year, with 45 per cent from mainland China. It registered revenue of HK$4.2 billion.

It's now official, Mystic Point and the highly awaited Mystic Manor attraction will open at HKDL in May, in two months from now!
