    Marvel not confirmed yet

A recent announcement by the Hong Kong government that the city’s struggling Disneyland will expand with a Marvel superheroes area appears to have been premature.

“We haven’t confirmed anything about it as yet,” Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs told The Wall Street Journal. The Marvel plans are being characterized as only part of the “potential options” for an expansion of the seven-year-old theme park.

Andrew Kam Min-ho, managing director of the theme park, said his team had been mulling over a dozen proposals [editor's note: for the expansion], trying to shortlist one or two for the final decision.

“Some are feasible, but some are not,” he said.

Lawmaker Michael Tien Puk-sun was concerned about whether Hong Kong’s 27-hectare theme park – among the smallest in the world – could rise to the challenge of Shanghai’s Disneyland, which is now under construction.

“What expansion plans do we have? Are we going to have a theme park the same size as an American one? Or will we stay a second-class theme park, rather than first-class?” he said.

Hong Kong Disneyland made a profit of HK$109 million – its first profit since opening in 2005 – in the fiscal year to last September.

Kam said the new attractions that opened last year gave a big boost to admissions and revenue.

About 6.7 million tourists, up by 13 per cent, visited the park last year, with 45 per cent from mainland China. It registered revenue of HK$4.2 billion.

Marvel Land confirmed for Hong Kong

On Wednesday, Hong Kong Financial Secretary John Tsang said the theme park, which is 52%-owned by the city’s government, will add an area featuring “Marvel heroes” as part of the resort’s expansion program.

  5. Speaking a Legislative Council economic development panel session, Yung said the expansion plans included adding a third hotel to the park. The two current hotels have about 1,000 rooms between them.

“We are now doing the design, and we aim to report to the legislature within the year on the design and financial arrangements,” he said.

The New York Times writes that although $14 million might seem like a small profit, it signals a turning point for Hong Kong Disneyland. The change in revenue follows a multimillion dollar expansion initiated to increase its number of visitors.

The results seem promising with a reported 13 percent increase in traffic last year, resulting in an annual total of 6.7 million visitors.

Disney acknowledges that the rise in attendance is largely due to the addition of attractions such as Toy Story and Grizzly Gulch.

  7. Trackless ride system confirmed!

Disneyland expects to open the last attraction of its three-stage HK$3.6 billion expansion project this spring.

The new area is called Mystic Point - home to "mysterious forces and supernatural events in the heart of a dense, uncharted rain forest", according to Disney.

A trackless ride system will take visitors through the haunted house-themed Mystic Manor, where explorer "Lord Henry Mystic" displays the artefacts he has collected on his travels.

Mystic Point, which follows the opening of mining town Grizzly Gulch in 2012 and Toy Story Land in 2011, will feature outstanding visual effects, said the park's vice-president of park operations Noble Coker. "As the Disney story goes, things happen," Coker said, refusing to say whether visitors will be able to interact with the artefacts.
