Construction of the waterpark is progressing "smoothly" but the land turned out to be more swampy than expected and even though a solution to dealing with the swampy land has been found, completion of the waterpark has been delayed by four to five months with an expected opening in either 2019 or 2020.
The extended metro line that CarlySX previously mentioned is on track (pun intended) for completion sometime between Septemebr 2019 and the end of 2019.
Regarding the Universal Studios theme park itself, groundwork at the site is still ongoing and will continue through November 2017 while completion of the park as a whole has been pushed back to 2021.

SeaWorld San Diego announced plans for a new launched steel roller coaster called "Electric Eel" that will open in 2018. The roller coaster is similar in design to Tempesto at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. The coaster will reach speeds of up to 62 mph and a height of 150 feet making it SeaWorld San Diego's fastest and tallest coaster.

It is meant to be the second phase of the Ocean Explorer attraction, which has a strong educational component and is oriented more to families. It will also feature an eel aquarium.
Ocean Explorer will be located on the southeast side of the park where Animal Connections had been and before that, the old Clydesdale barn and pasture. Both Ocean Explorer and the coaster, which will be where Arctic Plaza now is, will occupy an area west of the Journey to Atlantis ride.
Yesterday (January 8, 2016), SeaWorld San Diego had their final theatrical orca show. The show stadium will now be closed through May 2017 while a new stage is constructed with a more "natural" appearance. The new stage will feature extensive rock work, waterfalls and artificial trees and a large screen called the "Infinity Screen" that will extend across the stage displaying information that corresponds to the new educational presentation that will replace the theatrical shows. Construction of the new Orca Encounter stage began today with crane set-up.

Tons of details and new renderings have been released for the theme park part of Chimelong Qingyuan Forest Resort:

If the entire resort does end up being on just that 26 acre plot of land, it will be by far the smallest Atlantis Resort. To put it into perspective, the size of just the Aquaventure Watepark at Atlantis Dubai is about 42 acres - almost double the size of Atlantis Hawaii as a whole. The size of Atlantis Sanya - just the resort tower, the aquarium, and the event space, is about 18 acres.
The only way I could see Atlantis Hawaii working is:
- The tower itself being like Atlantis Sanya - only taking up 1-2 acres of land but being very tall
- Aquaventure Waterpark being very compact and even taking up less space than the already very compact Volcano Bay waterpark being built in Orlando (this would mean the majority of the 26 acres of Atlantis Sanya would be the waterpark)
- The restaurants, bars, retail boutiques, spa and fitness center, aquarium, and event space all mainly being within the narrow but tall resort tower

The new resort will cover over 26 acres, offering approximately 800 luxurious guest rooms and suites, 524 residences and a variety of amenities for guests, including restaurants, bars, retail boutiques, a Beach Club, an spa and fitness center, an aquarium, a water park and event space.
China Oceanwide (together with its subsidiary, “Oceanwide Resort Paradise HI LLC”) entered into a management agreement today with subsidiaries of Kerzner International Holdings Limited (“Kerzner”), a leading international developer and operator of destination resorts and ultra-luxury hotels, for a new, Atlantis resort in Ko OlinaSource: http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20161215005704/en/Iconic-Atlantis-Resort-Open-Ko-Olina-O%E2%80%99ahuOverlooking both the stunning Honu and Kohola Lagoons, Atlantis will offer a sense of awe-inspiring discovery, encompassing over 26 acres of unparalleled excitement and larger than life experiences, revolutionary water play in Aquaventure Waterpark, The Ambassador Lagoon and The Lost Chambers Aquarium and incredible dining experiences.
Is this saying that the entire park will be indoors like Warner Bros. and IMG Worlds of Adventure or just some or all of the animal exhibits will be indoors like at the other SeaWorlds????
I calculated the approximate acreage of the land that has been designated for SeaWorld Abu Dhabi based on the maps and it came out to about 160 acres. In comparison, SeaWorld San Diego is 190 acres.

Here's the official website for SeaWorld Abu Dhabi: http://seaworldabudhabi.ae/en
Here's some info from the FAQ:
What kind of marine life will be at SeaWorld Abu Dhabi?
Our teams are currently working on the design of the park, taking into consideration the 50 years of experience and learnings as well as the latest technology in creating the best homes for our marine life friends. We are still at the early stages and as we progress with the design, we will be sharing more information as it becomes available.
We've got the location of the resort as a whole now thanks to these government documents: http://www.qyup.gov.cn/qysghj/fags/201611/e6e7e08d09d045d1a9d9c471d8be4d61.shtml
^The star indicates the animal holding facility that is already actively holding animals (such as elephants) that will eventually be at the theme park
^All areas within the grey dashed lines are considered part of the resort, not necessarily the theme park itself
I'm still researching where the theme park area of the resort is specifically…
